You can also use command-option-shift-delete which gives you the option of moving the files to the trash...

Remove songs from iTunes library through a playlist

Um, Opt-Delete gives you the option to move the files to the trash, so why the extra keys?

Not hiaving it in front of me, I have to ask: Will this work for iPhoto, too, substuting 'Album' for 'Playlist'?

The shortcut leary suggested also works in iPhoto but you don't need the shift in either (just command-option-delete).

Thanks, this'll make it a lot easier on my hand!

All

Awesome hint! I've been wondering this for a long time...

Remove songs from iTunes library through a playlist

For some reason, I've never used the simple Del key (Fwd-del, usu. under Help), but used Command-Delete (the backwards-delete, usu. at the right end of the numbers row) to delete a track from a playlist. When you want to delete from the entire library, just as this hint says, add the Option key. So, Opt-Del or Cmd-Opt-Delete perform the same function.
The Option key works this way in a large number of Apple/MacOSX apps.

This and other shortcuts are displayed in Help Viewer by invoking the Help->Keyboard Shortcuts menu in iTunes. Look for that menu item in other iApps, too.

This should have a powerful corollary: if you want to do some cleanup you can use a Smart Playlist to create a list of things you want to get rid of, such as things you never listen to, and then delete them from that playlist. Beauty.

Remove songs from iTunes library through a playlist

Doesn't seem to work for Smart Playlists. There is no 'clear' option for songs in a Smart Playlist, so the Option-Delete type thing doesn't work in there.
I want to delete all songs from my iPod Nano that are NOT in a playlist. I've successfully created a smart playlist that lists all songs that have not been assigned to a playlist, but cannot use the contents of that smart playlist as the template for deleting tracks from the iPod.
Any ideas?

Remove songs from iTunes library through a playlist

Either copy all the songs to an ordinary playlist, and delete them from there. Or, as I used to do before i learned the option-del, select all the songs and change artist to 'X'. Go to library and delete all songs by 'X'.
Neither of this solutions are very practical or nice, but they work.

Delete non-iTunes-lib-dir files through a playlist

Bear in mind that if the tracks you want to delete are not in the iTunes library on disk -- I have my podcasts in ~/Music/iPodder/downloads, not under my iTunes library directory -- I couldn't get any keystroke combination to delete the file associated with the track.
I had to find and download this script:
http://www.dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=deleteselectedfiles
and put it into ~/Library/iTunes/Scripts -- and then it would allow me to select podcasts (again, associated to a file which was in ~/Music/iPodder/downloads, *not* in my iTunes library directory), pull down the script menu under iTunes, and then it deleted the actual files.
